Hi Guys! Thanks for the animated discussion on Batman the Animated Series. This was definitely a series that raised the bar for animated cartoons. As to Mr Fishburne as Perry White? He’s a great actor so why not? As to Spiderman, I agree, as long as it’s not just a gimmick, if there’s a good story behind it then also why not? I think that’s what’s so appealing about a story like Green Lantern, anyone can be the hero if they have the qualities within them. That’s the appeal of comics, these fantastical things can happen to anyone and so we can all see ourselves as that hero. Looking forward to your Finale, will there be a shirt rip? Take your time, get lots of rest, enjoy the summer. Thank you for hard work and for making such an enjoyable podcast.

Hey guys, interesting episode. I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the official picture of Cavill in costume. Thumbs up? Thumbs down? Or are you withholding judgement until Superman steps into the light?

The question re: race and superheroes (or any character, for that matter): Is “whiteness” an essential part of Peter Parker’s (or Spider-Man’s) character? I would say no. The social awkwardness, yes. The photography and scientific skills, yes. Even heterosexuality (else we’d have no storylines with Gwen Stacy or Mary Jane). But there is nothing “essential” about Peter Parker’s whiteness.

I’d have no problem if a future Peter Parker were black. But Miles is a new character; and all anyone sees of Spidey is his full-face mask and full-body costume; so he really is a hero where race is irrelveant. And I do think you’re right that, even if it is not logical, there are some cultural assumptions that will prevent some characters from ever being a different race. (Although I did see the Dallas Theatre Center’s revival of the Superman musical last summer, and Lois Lane was played, quite well, by a black actress. The race is simply irrelevant to the character, and that casting proved it.)

(Well, irrelvant except for that one awful Bronze Age issue, “I am (Curious) Black!” Ugh.)

A bigger problem would be if the Black Panther suddenly showed up being played by a white actor, since T’Challa is a black African. That is an essential part of his character: he defends his homeland and his people against (white) foreigners who would exploit them.

I have to agree on the casting for Man of Steel it could be THE best cast ever for a superhero movie. Larry Fishburne as Perry White is unbelievable casting. Cannot wait for more.
