Season 3 Episode 43

Posted by tinmanfrisbie on June 27th, 2011

We discuss the recent casting news for the Superman movie (Jor-El, Lara, and someone that fills the "general" role and it ain't Zod). We also give our take on the new Green Lantern movie. Joining us is Mark Cormier and Kama Stowell. Enjoy!

Enjoyed the podcast. I liked hearing the perspective of those who actually read GL comics. I was surprised that more time wasn’t spent on discussing the structural problems of the film from a story telling perspective. This seemed to be only mentioned in passing while having the largest negative impact on the final results.

I would be interested to hear something like a character profile for films in development. What you think are the key beats that capture the character and a brief over view of important touchstones in the characters history.

Since the question of the DC redesign of Superman and its connection to the lawsuit came up, I would love you to have a guest who has some technical understanding of the case, the likely possible outcomes, and the implications for Superman’s future.

There seems to be loads of speculation and conjecture by fans but I haven’t come across much in the way of knowledgeable opinion.

Lastly, for some constructive criticism when members of the panel interrupt and talk over one another it is distracting and breaks the rhythm of the discussion.

    On the whole good episode.

Mark, thanks for listening and for commenting. We are discussing trying slightly different formats for our reviews which will hopefully allow us to cover more specific aspects of what we’re reviewing, As for the interrupting of each other. None of us do it intentionally, but we are cognitive of it and have taken strides to limit it from happening. However, I think in certain instances our excitement and passion for the subject matter gets the best of us (at least in my case it does). Again, thanks for listening and stay super!

Great podcast again guys. I loved Green Lantern but I had some of the same problems you guys did mostly the films length and I didn’t care much for Hector Hammond he just seemed to be the lamest villain ever, he screamed more than Margot Kidder in the Superman movies :D . But overall I loved it, Ryan Reynolds and Mark Strong were great. Also on the Superman casting it just seems to be getting better and better, seems to be hitting higher heights than Nolan’s Batman casts (well at least on paper). Can’t wait for future podcasts I’m very excited that you are covering Superman TAS, in my opinion its the best animated show there’s been, most conistent aswell plus Tim Daly is the voice I hear for Superman when I’m reading the books. Anyways keep up the awesome work guys.

Hi Guys, Great first 27 minutes…sorry but it’s July and I still have not been able to see either Thor or Green Lantern movies. Instead I have among other things been babysitting my niece and nephew and got them hooked on the Brave and Bold cartoons. I actually found them quite entertaining and love the Henry Mancini’ish theme. So please, please don’t make me turn in my geek card! I have to say that I had no idea what you were all hinting at but I hope that along with the stellar casting for Man of Steel they get the giant robotic spider right. It’s always s a pleasure listening to your podcast, you are the rat packers of comics!

Thanks for the comments, Bob. We agree that the Man of Steel castings seem to make it look better and better. Let’s hope that translates into a good film.

@Anabel, we hope you go and see those movies soon if not soon then maybe at the cheap theater after it’s been out awhile. And if Man of Steel has a spider, I might not want to watch it!

What up guys! Man, I’m falling behind on these podcast. The casting for the Man of Steel is looking good. I especially like Russell Crowe as Jor-El, if that’s true. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean they will be spending more time on Krypton. Look at Marlon Brando, he was in the Superman movie for only a few minutes, but anything is possible. Issac, you should have slapped that annoying dude behind your seat. It’s not something Superman would have done, but something Batman would ;) Anyway, I would give Green Lantern a 7.5. It was not a great movie, but it was a good movie. Okay, it’s time to listen to the next podcast.
