Haha! I was not expecting that at the end. Great podcast! You guys did not mention Superman Returns : )
Great show guys.
I agree that Superman 3 is the best film so far. It is a silver/bronze age comic come to life.
I really enjoyed your discussion, and would love to hear you guys do more along this line. Very interesting and entertaining!
Have you read “Superhero: The Secret Origins of a Genre” by Peter Coogan? It’s a fantastic book — academic, yet accessible (and amply illustrated!), a real must-read for anyone interested in the larger, metaphorical and mythological dimensions of superhero tales.
One reason I love the ending of “Spider-Man 2″ is that it is, in fact, the mirror opposite of how “Superman II” ends. Both Lois and Mary Jane are living with the knowledge that their loved one is a superhero. Superman (arguably in mercy) relieves Lois of that burden, but Peter Parker cannot — and, boy, the look on Mary Jane’s face as Spidey swings out the window speaks volumes! Yes, she loves Peter, but she is already at that moment having second thoughts about being in, essentially, a three-way marriage with Spider-Man. I wish the third film had played up that hint of regret and hesitation more. (I am in the minority and do not think Spidey 3 was nearly as bad as many make it out to be, but that’s a discussion for another time, I guess!)
“He never once abuses it” — well, ok, but that’s the point of Superman, as you say! If you want to get nitpicky, you could point to young Clark showing off for Lana and the gang in Smallville, but….! Your point is well taken. I hadn’t ever thought of S III as giving us that necessary step in the hero’s journey - I’ll have to rewatch it with that in mind.
Again, you all really outdid yourselves with a great, intelligent, enjoyable discussion. Kudos!
Thank you for the kind words Mike. We really enjoyed the discussion. We will definately do more in the upcoming season. Well, that depends on how our cliffhanger is resolved of course….
Hi there,Great Rao what a podcast! You put the Homer in the show without the Simpson! Nicely done! Gotta give the endurance medal to Rennie for rewatching all the Smallville shows from start to finish. How many hours is that? LOL! Adam, I will be checking out the cliffs near my neighborhood in case I can spot someone hanging around…cheers!
Great finale guys, really enjoyed it. can’t wait for the return.
Rennie’s overview of Smallville was my highlight just superb and spot on.
And sorry Issac but you’re on your own with Superman III
As for the summer movies Cap was the best for me closely followed by X-Men, Thor and then GL.
Btw loved the ending folks hahaha
